Predicting Seismic Slope Displacements of Embankment Dams Using Fuzzy Systems
author
Abstract:
Iran, as a leading country in the dam construction industry, is located in one of the earthquake-prone regions of the world. Dams are important sources of hydroelectric power. Failure of these structures causes catastrophic damage. Therefore, evaluating the behavior of dams under seismic loading is an important issue. The present study focuses on the prediction of the slope displacements of embankment dams under earthquake loading. Real deformation in embankment dams due to earthquakes were gathered and analyzed. The amount of seismic slope displacement of embankment dams was predicted using fuzzy systems. Contributions of the effective variables were evaluated through a parametric study. Ultimately, the performance of the developed model was compared with existing analytical methods. Results indicate the acceptable accuracy of the proposed fuzzy-based model in estimating the slope displacement of embankment dams. This can be considered as an effective step in reducing the uncertainty involved in the deformation analysis of embankment dams.

A slope formed when there is a height difference between two points of the ground surface. Limited or ambiguous data defined in the studying of the slip surface have always been posed as a challenge to engineers and geologists; however, previous studies presented the useful strategies for resolving this challenge. In general, Multi Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) (with three input, output and hidden l...
full textFuzzy algorithm for estimating average breach widths of embankment dams
Dam breach width significantly influences peak breach outflow, inundation levels, and flood arrival time, but uncertainties inherent in the prediction of its value for embankment dams make its accurate estimation a challenging task in dam risk assessments. The key focus of this paper is to provide a fuzzy logic (FL) model for estimating the average breach width of embankment dams as an alternat...
full textLiquefaction of Earth Embankment Dams
Paul C. Rizzo Associates, Inc. (RIZZO) has developed efficient computational tools to evaluate the liquefaction potential of earth embankment dams located within high risk seismic regions. Two relevant case histories are the Saluda Dam and the Santee Cooper East Dam Extension, both structures susceptible to liquefaction, and located in South Carolina. Saluda Dam presents liquefaction risks with...
full textAssessment of Lateral Displacements using Neuro-Fuzzy Group Method of Data Handling Systems
Lateral spreading is one of the most destructive effects of liquefaction. Liquefaction is known as one of the major causes of ground failure related to earthquake. This phenomenon is likely to occur when the rate of earthquake-induced excess pore water pressure buildup exceeds the rate of drainage. Estimation of the hazard of lateral spreading requires characterization of subsurface conditions....
full textSeismic Behavior of Zoned Core Embankment Dam
The aim of this investigation is to study the dynamic behavior of a zoned core earth-fill dam. Due to lack of suitable clay materials, the Mamloo dam is designed as zoned core that is composed of three vertical zones including central lean clay (CL) core and two sides clayey gravel (GC) layers. Seismic behavior of dam was analyzed in two cases including homogenous clayey core and zoned core by ...
full textPredicting thermal displacements in modular tool systems.
In the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in compensating thermally induced errors to improve the manufacturing accuracy of modular tool systems. These modular tool systems are interfaces between spindle and workpiece and consist of several complicatedly formed parts. Their thermal behavior is dominated by nonlinearities, delay and hysteresis effects even in tools with simpler g...
